It was truly a pleasure to host the Re-Thinking White Privilege workshop tonight at the ETFO Office. Emily and I really enjoyed the time with all of you and loved being part of such engaging and meaningful dialogue about these important issues.
In the comments area below, please share any feedback you have following this workshop. You are welcome to share reflections, suggestions, or ideas - as mentioned above, please be sure to add your name to the comment for the benefit of all of us. I look forward to continuing this discussion!
Welcome!
This blog was inspired by the rich discussion at the ETFO Waterloo Equity & Social Justice Committee's Re-Thinking White Privilege workshop on March 30, 2015. Following the workshop, a suggestion was made that we might create some type of online community where the discussion could continue. I hope that this blog provides that space. The blog will be maintained by me, Susan Watt, and I will create the posts. Anyone may contribute comments to the posts - we ask that you please identify yourself by adding your name to your comments. If you have an idea for a post, please contact me at susanmwatt@gmail.com. If you choose the 'Follow by Email' option below, you will get a notification each time there is a new post.
What strikes me is how white privilege hangs on, long after white colonial rule has left. On my way home from Pakistan last summer, I had to use the airport "facilities" while waiting for my flight. Since the washroom on the ground floor was in a complete state of fecal disarray, I thought I'd try my luck upstairs in the VIP section. I didn't have first class tickets, but I thought maybe I could ask the guard if I could just use the washroom and come out again. I was in local traditional dress, with my head covered, and he began to get up from his seat, but as soon as he saw my white face, he smiled, sat down, and didn't bother checking the tickets. He assumed I had use of the VIP lounge.
